About Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique is a light touch, muscle release therapy consisting of a series of precise and gentle moves over soft tissue using thumbs and fingers with no hard tissue manipulation involved. The aim of the treatment is to disturb muscles, soft tissue and energy within the body to bring back a state of balance.

The Bowen Technique was developed in Australia in the 1950's by Thomas Bowen. Although he had no formal medical training, he became interested in massage and body work which led him to work with many sports people, thus developing his own 'technique'. In his 40's he had a thriving practice in remedial therapy (now Bowen Technique)and it was estimated that he treated 13,000 people in 1 year, 85% of whom only required 2 - 3 treatments.

What does a treatment involve?
A treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes- 1 hour. At the first session a full medical history is taken, followed by the treatment which can be performed over light clothing or directly on skin. During the treatment breaks are taken where the therapist leaves the room for a few minutes at a time to allow changes in the body to take place.
Many people experience immediate pain relief if that is what they are suffering from, but improvement can take place over the next few days. Two or three treatments are often enough to achieve long lasting relief, and even chronic conditions can respond quickly.
It is recommended that no other physical therapies are used at the same time as Bowen eg. massage, physiotherapy, etc.

Who can benefit?
The therapy is so gentle that everyone from babies to the elderly can be treated successfully. It can also be very useful during pregnancy. Athletes and sports persons have been delighted by enhanced performance after receiving Bowen therapy.
